Absence Without Leave

Absence Without Leave describes the abandonment of a duty without permission – or simply desertion. I disobey expectations about the invisibility of my gendered self. The female body is not able to enter visual representation with non-representation. Cultural norms and visual practice create expectations of what is adequate visibility. The body cannot be thought of as a genderless corpse. I converted the representation of the objectified body into an image of form (the white two-dimensional line) and surface (the skin). This work also includes a video installation that explores the same imagery but under time-based aspects.
